Galvey provides a delivery service selling cakes, drinks, sweets and bread products to hospitals, retail chains, airports, colleges and corner shops, predominately any retailer who is not in the position to buy in large quantities of goods. Galvey operates a sale or return service replenishing stock and exchanging goods that have gone out of date code.

Challenge

Manor Bakeries were relying on an outdated electronic field sales system, which was no longer supported or produced. When Galvey was formed they were unable to take over the existing Manor Bakeries field sales system as it was no longer supported.  As it would have been impractical for Galvey to revert to a paper based system, it was clear that a new system was required.

There was a need for a cost effective van sales system that would allow mobile sales people to carry out the full range of transactions at the point of sale, and to communicate the information wirelessly to the back office system.

Solution

AM Labels fully analysed Galvey’s requirements and in particular the invoicing requirements of Manor Bakeries and recommended FIELDlink, a unique on route van sales system.

AM Labels were able to provide a solution consisting of a PC administration software to manage customer products and discount information and to allocate calls to routes. The handheld terminal software allowed the operator to take orders and either print a delivery note (credit customers) or an invoice (cash customers). The handheld software keeps track of stock levels on the van and also allowed payments to be collected.

Brighton Best required a customised system to print product labels for screws and fittings, the system comprised of 4 PCs, 4 Zebra printers and Nicelabel software. The software needed to connect to a existing database containing details of all of their products. Brighton Best also required the ability to change the fields on the product labels, such as product code and quantity, at print time. Brighton Best needed to improve the quality of their product labels and increase the reliability of their Zebra printers in order to reduce label printing downtime.

KGH had two outdated Tec printers printing slide labels in the Pathology Labs that were costing a great deal of money to service and fix ongoing problems. It was obvious that these printers needed to be replaced. The other problem was that the printers were driven by out of date software using an aged version of the Tec programming language. KGH were also having problems with the slide labels sticking to each other during printing cycles. The label material needed to be synthetic and extremely durable.

Solution:
AM Labels sourced a solution to the coding requirements through the use of Nicelabel software. AM Labels were able to translate the code to work with a newer range of label printers. AM Labels supplied them with Zebra Z4M printers, Nicelabel software and Zebra branded labels and ribbons. Arnhem Wharf Primary School, a state community school with over 430 pupils between the ages of three and eleven. The school is one of 102 schools in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

By 2010 a new government standard, the Financial Management Standard In Schools (FMSIS), should be implemented in all Primary, Middle, Secondary and Special schools. Part of the standard requires all schools to have an efficient way of managing and tracking their assets. Arnhem Wharf School therefore needed to come into line with the standard by finding a way to record all school assets accurately.

Solution:

This provided BSH with the perfect opportunity to update their ageing hardware with new, flexible products, designed to suit users’ needs as well as being rugged, reliable and easy to use. Additionally, BSH wanted a fast, dependable and top-quality service provider.

The dedicated AML team configured the handheld computers and cordless barcode scanners to operate to their exact needs when used to pick small appliances and spare parts at Milton Keynes. This has improved simplicity of use and user confidence. While the Kettering distribution centre has installed new rugged cordless barcode scanners and vehicle mount computers on its fork lift trucks, which are used in the picking of large domestic appliances. AML also ensured that all the equipment was installed to retain all the critical settings even after a cold start, and required the minimum set-up time for the operators. 88 Years Old, Ted Quarmby The Oldest Salesman in Northamptonshire or even in the UK?AM Labels Limited, Kettering, the labelling, bar coding and software solution specialist, has recently acquired Applied Labels of Corby. And one newly acquired asset is Ted Quarmby who is 88 years old! Ted has worked with the Applied Labels team for 15 years and as a result of the acquisition is now looking after sales and deliveries for AM Labels.

Anglia Tonight interviewed Ted for ITV to find out what keeps him working at 88 years’ old.

AM Labels Limited (AML), Kettering, the labelling, bar coding and software solution specialist, has recently acquired Applied Labels of Corby. And one newly acquired asset is Ted Quarmby who is 88 years’ old! Ted has worked with the Applied Labels team for 15 years’ and as a result of the acquisition is now looking after sales and deliveries for AML.

Ted started his career in 1935, at the age of 14 at Crafton, in Leicester, as a Trainee Lithographic Artist. This first step on the ladder clearly paved the way for the rest of his career, as Ted has spent most of his working life within the print industry from newspapers to plate-making, providing a wealth of knowledge and experience for AM Labels Limited.

Ted says: “I don’t think there’s any secret to still being as active as I am at this age. I just like to work and enjoy being involved, and have been fortunate to have had a succession of enjoyable jobs. I’ve always been involved in the print industry in some way, but I’m still learning everyday! AM Labels is a highly organised company, with fully computerised systems and processes. I’ve never used a computer before, but I’m really looking forward to learning how to now. It’s all very exciting, and I can’t wait for the challenges ahead.”

Ted has also achieved many accolades during his 88 years’ including service during the Second World War and receiving a medal in honour of his bravery. He was also a keen and talented piano player and swimmer. Ted joined Leicester Swimming Club in 1930 and rose through the ranks to become President of the Leicestershire Amateur Swimming Association in between 1966 and 1967.
